When treating a sports injury, many causes of heel pain, or other matters that involve the soft tissues of the foot or ankle, traditional methods are often effective.
In some cases, however, we may recommend an advanced form of treatment, such as amniotic injection therapy. This can be particularly helpful for situations when we want to accelerate the rate of healing or “kick start” the healing of chronic problems.
What Are Amniotic Injections?
Amniotic injection therapy falls under the category of “regenerative medicine.” This is any form of therapy that uses the natural elements of the body to provide positive results.
Amniotic injections are made of growth factors and other elements found within amniotic fluid and the amniotic membrane. They are processed into a usable form and then injected directly into the site of tissue injury or damage.
Once present at the site, the growth factors within the injection can naturally stimulate cells to accelerate healing and recovery—or, in cases of chronic pain, it can stimulate cells that had previously “given up” on the healing process to begin anew.
What Conditions Can Amniotic Injections Help?
Amniotic injection therapy can be effective in the treatment of many foot and ankle conditions, including:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Tendinitis
- Arthritis
- Muscle, tendon, and ligament tears
- Sprains
That said, just because you may have a certain condition does not always mean we will recommend amniotic injections as part of your treatment plan. We are always happy to discuss our recommendations with you and answer any questions you may have about them.
What Can I Expect From the Treatment Session?
An injection requires only a short amount of time, much like any other form of injection you would receive at a doctor’s office. Once complete, you are free to continue on with your day as you might normally. You might feel some soreness or discomfort in the area of the injection. This is normal and usually lasts two or three days. We recommend applying ice to the affected area several times per day and keeping it elevated whenever possible.
Is Amniotic Injection Therapy Safe and Ethical?
We are very happy to say that the answer to both questions is an emphatic “Yes!”
In regard to being safe, the major benefit of amniotic injections and most other forms of regenerative medicine is that they contain nothing that should be recognized by the body as a foreign material. Since the injection contains basic elements found in the human body, the chance of the therapy being rejected is virtually zero.
In regard to being ethical, the gathering of amniotic fluid and tissue is done in a way that can never cause harm to a mother or child at any point in the process. All gathering of these materials is performed after a healthy, planned delivery via Caesarean section. Mothers voluntarily donate these materials, and no action is taken to gather until both mother and child are safe and sound. Generally, these amniotic materials would be discarded as “waste” after birth. Now, they can be used to help others!
